Some controversies never end and mysteries remain to haunt future generations. Is the D.K. Ravi death by hanging some such queer instance of miscarriage of justice? Politics would always have something to say like the BJP pointing fingers at the state government.
What actually happened on April 16 when a bright and promising IAS officer’s life was cut short by the cruel hand of fate? CBI in its preliminary report indicates that the apparent suicide may be the result of huge losses at real estate investment indulged in by D.K. Ravi and his friends. Further, only one call was made to the batch mate on that fateful day and not 44 calls is the conclusion.
The media always has lightning short memories cruelly enough. Yet when ethics, values and justice arises, the public has some time honored principles. Vehement protests shook Bangalore and Karnataka after the sudden death, certainly reminding that people desire justice.
Besides, D.K. Ravi was known to be upright, sincere and honest in his dealings. The same cannot be said about a bureaucracy where a lot of corruption and bribery rules. We must never ever forget that India is among the most corrupt countries globally but certainly less so than Pakistan.
Yet the CBI enquiry is not done yet. All the evidence like the viscera and the photographs are being sent for a detailed analysis to the Central Forensics Laboratory by Karnataka Police. The complete report may enable more truths to be revealed. Meanwhile everybody would have to wait in suspense to see what other dirty secrets are exposed.
As Additional Commissioner, Commercial Tax (Enforcement), D.K. Ravi was found hanging at the Bengaluru home. The hue and cry did not help matters and over a month has now passed. Regarding forces interested to sully the good name of the officer, certain people may be leaking malicious information to the press, it is surmised. The case was first handled by the state CID and later handed over to CBI after intense pressure from family, public and political opposition parties. Why was the Chief Minister reluctant to hand over the case to CBI?
Now the CBI believes that no foul play is involved and wishes to end the case as suicide. The finding is that Ravi and his friend Hari wanted to buy land at Chickballapur for a company named R and H Properties. They had collected over Rupees five crore for the purpose. The venture did not succeed because it was found that scheduled castes and tribes owned the land. The investors now demanded the return of money.
Regarding the slander, a local newspaper reported that he received a deposit of Rupees ten lakh from a female batch mate. The report also indicated that Ravi told a friend to withdraw Rupees two crore for his wife from the company account. Such reports could have been planted to sully his good name. Ravi called that batch mate only once on the day of death as it is now argued.
